The way yarn is spun, the length and density of the terry loops, the tension of the weave and the washing and finishing processes all affect the final cloth.

It is this combination of material and manufacturing knowledge that has made Portugal such an important source for premium towels.

Softness without sacrificing performance

There is an interesting distinction between a towel that feels luxurious on a shop floor and one that is actually luxurious to live with.

A very heavy or excessively soft towel isn't necessarily a better towel. Treatments can create an impressive initial hand-feel while compromising absorbency or changing significantly after repeated washing.

The best Portuguese towels tend to balance the things that actually matter: softness, absorbency, weight, drying time and durability.

They feel beautiful on day one, but they're designed for day one hundred too.

Tradition, meet technology

Part of Portugal's success is that its textile industry hasn't simply relied on heritage.

The country's mills have invested heavily in textile engineering, research, modern machinery and more responsible manufacturing. The result is an industry capable of combining highly specialised human knowledge with extraordinary precision.

The country hasn't preserved an old textile industry. It has continually improved it.
