Sateen Decoded.
Often mistaken for satin, sateen is something quite different. We look at the weave behind its distinctive softness, subtle lustre and fluid drape, and how it compares with crisper cotton bed linen.
No, it isn't satin.
Sateen is a term often encountered when choosing bed linen, and just as often misunderstood. Its similarity in name to satin has led to an enduring assumption that the two are closely related.
They are not.
Sateen refers to the way a fabric is woven, rather than the fibre from which it is made. In the case of the bed linen we select at Perrault, that fibre is cotton.
The difference is found in its construction.
What is sateen?
In a sateen weave, threads pass over several others before being woven beneath again. This creates a greater expanse of uninterrupted cotton at the surface of the cloth.
It is this construction that gives sateen its distinctive character: smooth to the touch, softly lustrous and fluid in its drape.
The resulting fabric can have an almost silky quality, which perhaps explains the frequent comparison with satin. But where satin may be woven from silk or synthetic fibres, cotton sateen retains the natural breathability, softness and practicality of cotton.
It is not intended to be glossy or slippery. A well-made sateen has a much quieter finish.
Sateen or percale?
The distinction is less about quality than preference.
Percale is constructed using a simple, balanced weave, creating the crisp, cool and matte finish often associated with beautifully laundered hotel linen.
Sateen feels different. Its weave produces a smoother hand and a softer drape.
One is not inherently better than the other. They simply offer two quite different experiences of sleeping in cotton.
