The Anatomy of a Great Towel

Some people prefer the light, crisp feel of a faster-drying towel. Others seek the enveloping comfort of a deeply plush bath sheet after an evening soak. The common thread is quality.

The Anatomy of a Great Towel

Few things in the home are used more often than a bath towel, yet few are understood less.

Weight, yarn, fibre length, weave, finishing — each plays a part in how a towel feels on the skin, how well it dries, and how beautifully it ages. While many towels may appear similar at first glance, the difference between an ordinary towel and an exceptional one is immediately apparent the moment you use it.

So what exactly makes a great towel?

It Begins with the Cotton

Like fine linen or cashmere, exceptional towels begin with exceptional raw materials.

The world's finest towels are typically woven from long-staple cotton, prized for its longer, stronger fibres. These fibres create yarns that are softer, more durable and less prone to pilling over time.

The result is a towel that feels luxurious from the very first use, yet continues to perform beautifully for years to come.

Understanding GSM

One of the first specifications you'll encounter is GSM, or grams per square metre.

Quite simply, GSM measures the density of the towel.

  • 300–450 GSM – Lightweight, quick-drying, and ideal for everyday use.
  • 500–650 GSM – A balanced and luxurious towel offering softness, absorbency and practicality.
  • 700 GSM and above – Deeply plush, indulgent towels that create a true hotel experience.

While GSM is important, it should never be viewed in isolation. A poorly made 700 GSM towel can feel heavy and lifeless, while a beautifully woven 550 GSM towel may outperform it in every meaningful way.

Quality is about far more than weight alone.

The Importance of the Yarn

The character of a towel is largely determined by the yarn used to weave it.

Traditional cotton yarns are tightly twisted to maximise strength.

Zero-twist yarns, however, rely on the natural strength of premium long-staple cotton, allowing the fibres to remain open and airy. The result is a towel that feels exceptionally soft, wonderfully absorbent and surprisingly lightweight.

This is one of the reasons zero-twist towels have become synonymous with luxury hotels and premium homes around the world.

Absorbency Matters

The finest towels don't simply feel soft — they perform.

Highly absorbent cotton draws moisture away quickly while remaining comfortable against the skin. Rather than pushing water around, it leaves you dry in fewer passes, making every shower or bath feel that little bit more indulgent.

Where It's Made

Some of the world's finest towels come from Portugal, where generations of textile expertise have created an unrivalled reputation for quality.

Combining exceptional cotton, advanced weaving technology and meticulous finishing, Portuguese mills continue to produce towels found in many of the world's finest hotels and homes.

While great towels can certainly be made elsewhere, Portugal has earned its place as one of the true centres of excellence.

Choosing the Right Towel

There is no universally perfect towel — only the one that best suits the way you live.

Some people prefer the light, crisp feel of a faster-drying towel. Others seek the enveloping comfort of a deeply plush bath sheet after an evening soak.

The common thread is quality.

Look beyond the colour, beyond the price, and even beyond the GSM. Consider the cotton, the yarn, the craftsmanship and where it was made. These are the details that determine whether a towel lasts for years or is ready to be replaced after only a handful of washes.

At Perrault, every towel is chosen with these principles in mind. From beautifully woven everyday essentials to the world's finest bath linens, each collection has earned its place through exceptional craftsmanship, enduring quality and the simple pleasure of making everyday rituals feel just a little more luxurious.
